It's that time of year again and the fencing club's Annual General Meeting will be held at 8:00 on Tuesday 11th March. This is an opportunity to round up the year and to elect the new committee for the next academic year.

Running for a committee position in a University club is a great opportunity to get involved and have your say in the running of the club. It also looks great on a CV! So if you think that you would like to get involved this is your opportunity.

Committee roles are as follows:

Club Captain:

This is the most demanding role in the club. Club Captain is responsible for the general running of the club. From booking halls for training to organizing coaching, the Club Captain concerns themselves with the club as a whole including beginners and advanced members. Much of this job involves liaising with the Sports Office and the Union, being a good face for the club and an approachable person within the club.

Treasurer:

Treasurer's job involves keeping the books for the club, collecting membership from new members and helping to decide how money is spent. Treasurer is an interesting and hands on job and is an invaluable role within the committee.

Secretary:

The secretary's main roles are to take minutes from committee meetings and to write the newsletter and other written communications.

The Secretary, Treasurer and Club Captain are the three signatory positions on the fencing club's committee. This means that they are able to sign forms dealing with money have more legal responsibility than other committee members.

The team Captains:

The Fencing club currently has two teams which compete in the BUSA (inter-university) leagues. There is both a men's team captain and a women's team captain. The team captain's are responsible for the teams and also for organizing transport to and from matches and for picking teams. Team captains do not need to compete themselves; however they must always attend matches with the team. Matches are held on Wednesday afternoons and most away matches will necessitate leaving on Wednesday morning. Please take this into consideration before taking on a role as a captain.

Social Secretary:

This role involves organizing social events of all different types to cater for all members of the club and advertising them to club members.

Armourer:

The Armourer's role is to look after club kit and weapons. This includes all clothing, blades and equipment. This role involves making sure that kit is safe for beginners to use and fixing broken weapons. It also involves regularly washing club clothing.

Webmaster:

This role involves the running and regular updating of the website and setting up the Club mailing list.

Any member of the club can run for any committee position. All club members are expected to attend the AGM which will follow the beginners coaching session, starting promptly at 8:00 on Tuesday 11th March. For contested roles candidates will be asked to say briefly what they aim to do within their role. Votes will then be cast by secret ballot and announced immediately. Elected committee members will then have a period of handover in which the present committee will run in conjunction with the new committee. This will give the present committee the opportunity to explain things to the new committee before the end of the academic year.

Hope to see you all at the AGM and best of luck to anybody running for a committee position.
