Club Captain Name: Tom Exeter DOB: 24/10/86 Weapon: Foil Degree: Sports and Exercise Science Home Town: Southgate, North London Job: Barman Hey everyone, I'm the club captain and I'm also on the university men's 1st team, which is a great laugh. I've been fencing for 13 years and currently have a national ranking of 78th. Over the years I have represented both London and Yorkshire senior teams. I love to compete in the fencing circuit, and my main hobbies at university are partying and having a good time – all the time! You'll most likely find me in the gym, a pub/club or just relaxing with my friends. Work never really seems to happen! |
Secretary Name: Laura Mingins DOB: 08/08/88 Weapon: Sabre and Foil Degree: French and English Home Town: Cirencester Job: TBC Hi all, my main role at the club for the forthcoming year is to keep you informed of what's going on through the newsletter which will be updated on a monthly basis and contains information of up and coming matches, events and socials as well as results from previous matches. I am also responsible for taking minutes at committee meetings and for raising money for the club through sponsorship and for advertising the club and dealing with new membership forms. If you wish to join the club or are interested in finding out more about us, please feel free to approach me. I am a second year student at the University and have been fencing for 2 years. My main weapon is sabre but I enjoy fencing foil and plan to try my hand at épée over the course of the year. |
Treasurer and Webmaster Name: Douglas Mendum DOB: 18/07/87 Weapon: Foil Degree: History and German Home Town: East Barnet, North London Job: Student Hi everyone, I'm the club's Treasurer and Webmaster. My main job over the year will be to manage the club's money, collect the membership fees and spend the Lottery Grant money. As Webmaster I will be responsible for keeping the website updated. I am a second year student at the University and have been fencing for 3 years. I mainly fence foil, but I am looking to begin to fence sabre this year. |
Men's Team Captain Name: James Mitchell DOB: 18/05/88 Weapon: Épée Degree: Law Home Town: Durham Job: Barman and Profesional Drinker I'm the Men's Team captain, so I dont do much outside of the matches, but you will see me around as Tom's sidekick. I have been fencing for 12 years and am an épéeist but I do a bit of sabre and foil now and then when I'm feeling girly. I used to compete a lot and have represented my country and region but now I'm just happy to compete for the University. You're likely to see me as the drunk guy with lots of drinks to hand at the socials, or hungover at training. |
Women's Team Captain Name: Hayley Beaumont DOB: 23/03/88 Weapon: Foil Degree: Accounting and Law Home Town: Guiseley, Leeds Job: TBC I'll be looking after the Women's Team, getting us to matches, scheduling specific team training sessions, and also team building exercises! I primarily fence foil but fought épée and sabre for the first time last year; and was then nicknamed the team's Wooden Spoon. I've been fencing for about five years and competing for four, ever since James Bond converted me to the sport. I hope to see you on the piste! |
Armourer and Kit Manager Name: Liam Patterson DOB: 20/11/87 Weapon: Foil Degree: Environment and Business Home Town: Buxton, Derbyshire Job: TBC Coming soon... |
Social Secretary Name: Katy Burns DOB: 17/06/87 Weapon: Foil Degree: Classics Home Town: Harpenden, Hertfordshire Job: TBC I started fencing when I was 10, but took an 8 year break and picked it up again when I came to Leeds. I am proof that you don't have to be any good at fencing to join this club! Although I might not be a great fencer, I do know how to have a good time and that's why I'll be taking care of the important stuff – socials! As well as the usual club nights, Otley runs and meals out, I will be organising other fun stuff to do too. You can expect pool nights, paint balling, poker evenings and pub quizzes! I'll be doing my best to make sure you leave uni with great memories and friends from LUUFC. Come and join the best society in Leeds! |
